To test if a element is working or not a engineer would connect a ohmmeters live and neutral wires to the corresponding connectors on the element and check for a positive reading, no reading would mean a faulty element, the engineer would also use the ohmmeter to read across both terminals again and the earth terminal on the element but in this case a positive reading would mean a faulty element and a negative reading would mean no fault on the earth to live and earth to neutral connectors

A defective water heater element prevents the water from heating in a washing machine. There are ways to make sure if you have a water heater element in your washing machine, which is not working. If the fuse or circuit breaker blows within a few minutes of turning on your washing machine, there is a chance the fault is with the systems heating element. The glass section of the washing machine becomes at least warm if not hot during a hot water wash. If the glass section remains cold to your touch it definitely indicates a faulty heating element. Another sign of a faulty heating element is the non stopping wash process.

The above mentioned signs may or may not indicate a faulty heating element. To test if an element is working or not a professional connects neutral wires to the related connectors on the element and verify it for a positive reading. If it does not show a reading it means the heating element is faulty. Here however, a positive reading means a faulty heating element while a negative reading mean no fault with the heating element.
