If
the water heating unit is installed in a confined space, proper combustion and
ventilation must be observed. In installing the vent system for your gas water
heaters, air surrounding your building should be free from volatile,
combustible materials as well as halogenated hydrocarbons such as air in beauty
shops, dry cleaning establishments, and photo processing labs. Failure of the
heater due to operation in a corrosive atmosphere voids the water
heater warranty. If you have proper ventilation with the outside
for the gas and air, power vent or a direct vent would be a favorable option. Direct vent water heater may be
in a tankless version or a traditional tank type models. Direct venting pulls
the fresh combustion air from outdoors and expels all the products of
combustion outside through an adjacent wall.
Water Heater Venting - Pros and Cons
Gas
fired water heaters requites ventilation, especially for tank less types as
they are placed inside the home. It is easier to install a "power
vented" type ventilation of propane or natural gas. It relies on a fan to
blow gases out. With natural draft type of vents, the waste gas rises through
the diverter to the metal pipes and lead to the outdoors. There also has to be
a power outlet right near the fan as it is electric generated.
It
would be 30% to 40% more than the natural draft type of vent.
However this is a good solution for tightly built homes, wherein a draft type
is not feasible. Before deciding though, it is best to consult a professional
to look over your place and seek advice on which type of vent is most
efficient, safe and cost-effective.
